What to expect

Penile Doppler Ultrasound

What is a Penile Doppler Ultrasound?

A penile Doppler ultrasound is a non-invasive test that uses sound waves to check blood flow in the penis. It helps diagnose causes of erectile dysfunction (ED) and assesses blood vessel health.

Purpose of the Procedure

  • Evaluate erectile dysfunction.

  • Check for blood flow issues (venous leak or arterial insufficiency).

  • Assess conditions such as Peyronie’s disease.

What to expect during the ultrasound study

  • Preparation: Avoid sexual activity for 24 hours before the test. Wear comfortable and loose clothing to your appointment.

  • Medications: Inform your provider of any medications you are currently taking.

  • Consent: You will need to sign a consent form prior to the start of the test. (This will be given to you at the time of your appointment).

The Procedure

      • Setting: Test will take place in our urology office.

      • Positioning: You will lie on your back with pants and underwear lowered to your knees. You will be covered with a drape sheet.

      • Ultrasound: During the exam a sonographer will place the ultrasound probe and gel on the penis to acquire images of blood flow in the penis. A physician/PA/NP/RN will inject an erection-inducing medication (ex: Alprostadil/ Trimix) into the penis. After the injection the sonographer will continue to take images of the blood flow for about 20 minutes.

      • Duration: 30 to 60 minutes

After the Procedure

      • Recovery: You can return to your normal activities right away, but you may feel some temporary discomfort.

Post-Procedure Risks and Management

1. Temporary Tenderness: Management: Avoid vigorous activity for a day or two after the test. Gentle movements and rest is the most beneficial.

2. Mild Discomfort or Bruising: Management: Use an ice pack on the area for 15-20 minutes to reduce discomfort. Over-the-counter pain relief can be taken (ex: acetaminophen)

3. Prolonged Erection (Priapism): Management: If an erection lasts longer than four(4) hours, seek immediate medical attention. This can be a serious condition requiring treatment.

4. Allergic Reaction to Medications: Management: Notify your provider if you experience itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing after the test.

Conclusion

A penile Doppler ultrasound is a safe and effective way to assess erectile dysfunction and blood flow in the penis. If you have any questions or concerns, please discuss them with your healthcare provider prior to your appointment.
