Jennifer M. Cushman, MD, is an Interventional Spine and Pain Management Physician
at NY Health.
Dr. Cushman is dedicated to providing the support and interventions required to treat
various chronic pain conditions in order to improve ambulation and function, as well as
improve patients' overall independence and quality of life. She also specializes in
treating various chronic pain disorders, sports-related injuries, and chronic conditions
including low back pain, joint pathologies including knee, shoulder, and hip pain, and
additional joint-related disorders using both ultrasound and fluoroscopy techniques.
Her medical journey began after she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in
Physiology from the School of Health Science: Sargent College Premedical track at
Boston University, Boston, MA, before completing her Doctor of Medicine at the Medical
University of Silesia.
Dr. Cushman’s interest in Physics, Anatomy, and Physiology inspired her to pursue a
career in musculoskeletal medicine and interventional pain management. After College,
she furthered her academic pursuits by completing a post-baccalaureate program in
cancer biology and research at the City College of NY (CUNY) in Manhattan, where she
participated in cancer research focused on inflammatory breast cancer. Before starting
residency, she also has participated in research in a gait laboratory, using Vicon motion
capture software to reconstruct a patient’s gait cycle and study the pathology behind
abnormal vectors and forces applied on various joints responsible for creating pain
during ambulation.
Her additional research endeavors included a clinical study measuring oxygen
consumption, heart rate changes, and VO2 max before and after hip replacement, as
well as serving as co-author on a retrospective cohort study at Memorial Sloan Kettering
investigating periosteal injections as a treatment for metastatic bone cancer pain that
was published in Pain Medicine.
Throughout her medical residency training, Dr. Cushman was recognized for her
academic excellence, extensive community service, and clinical research, earning
induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society at the Albert Einstein
College of Medicine - Montefiore Hospital Medical Center. She also received the
Montefiore Resident Research of the Year award during her third year of Residency
training.
Dr. Cushman completed her preliminary year of medical residency training in Internal
Medicine at One Brooklyn Health - Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center,
followed by additional residency training in the field of Physical Medicine &
Rehabilitation at Montefiore Hospital Medical Center and NYC Health and Hospitals
Jacobi Medical Center. She then specialized further by completing her ACGME
approved Fellowship in Interventional Spine and Pain Medicine at the Department of
Anesthesia - Pain Management at St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center, a Boston
University Teaching Hospital. During fellowship, she learned minimally invasive surgical
techniques that are used for various pain conditions, as well as the use of
neuromodulation to treat chronic pain disorders.
Dr. Cushman is a strong advocate for patients with disabilities. She conducted an IRB-
approved research project at Montefiore Hospital with the Departments of PM&R and
Ophthalmology focusing on the assessment of voter independence using a ballot
marking device for the visually impaired.
She also believes in strong community service and during her residency, she led the
Montefiore Bronx Chapter of the ‘Walk with a Doc’ program, promoting healthy living
and exercise in underserved urban communities. Her professional involvement extends
to multiple state societies, including the NY and NJ Society of Physical Medicine &
Rehabilitation. She also has served as secretary on the NYSPMR executive board from
2021-2022, and currently co-chairs the legislative committee of the NY Society of
Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and was appointed as an active delegate for the
Medical State Society of NY Annual House of Delegates. Additionally, she is chair of the
Pain Medicine community through the American Academy of Physical Medicine &
Rehabilitation (AAPMR).
She is a member of the North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS), and has
provided an oral presentation on the use of neuromodulation for metastatic cancer pain
management. She is also focused on continued research in the field of cancer pain
management and wants to explore the use of neuromodulation for the treatment of
metastatic cancer pain.
