Why Breast Screenings are so Important
This October, take control of your health—early detection of breast cancer can save your life. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s the perfect time to not only educate yourself about breast cancer but also prioritize your annual screening.
Finding breast cancer as early as possible is the way to get the best outcome possible. The key to early diagnosis is screenings! When breast cancer is found early, it is easier to treat and more likely to have a successful treatment.
Mammograms use low-dose X-rays that help detect breast cancer early, often before symptoms appear. This increases the chances of successful treatment. It is recommended that women receive yearly mammograms after they turn 40 unless they are at a higher risk.
If you’re over 40 or at higher risk due to family history or the BRCA gene mutation, it’s time to make mammograms part of your routine. The BRCA gene is a mutation that occurs in both men and women, which increases your risk of developing breast cancer.
Why is screening so important? Early detection gives you the best chance for effective treatment. Mammograms can help a doctor diagnose their patient with breast cancer before they even begin to show symptoms. Even though mammograms can't prevent cancer, they are a critical step in catching it early—giving you the best shot at effective treatment.
Other forms of screening are self-checks and breast exams from your primary care doctor and OBGYN.
