Tips for Avoiding Hard Falls in Winter

Winter brings snow and sleet, making walking, running, and driving hazardous. Falling can cause injury and negatively affect your health. Here are some simple tips to help prevent hard falls during this season:

1. Wear Proper Footwear

Choose non-slip footwear or boots that provide stability on icy or slippery surfaces. This is essential for preventing falls.

 2. Clear Pathways

Shovel snow regularly and use salt to melt ice on pathways. Clearing your walking areas reduces hazards and makes it safer to walk outdoors.

3. Keep Your Hands Free

When walking outside in snowy or icy conditions, keep your hands free. This allows you to brace yourself in case of a fall and helps protect you from injury.

 4. Take Your Time

Move slowly and steadily in cold weather. You can maintain your balance by taking deliberate, small steps and avoid losing your center of gravity.

5. See Your Doctor

If you do fall, make it a priority to see your doctor for an evaluation. If you live alone, consider wearing a medical alert system to ensure you have 24/7 access to help in an emergency.

If you have any questions about staying safe during winter, talk to your doctor.
