March is National Kidney Month! Did you know as many as 9 in 10 people are not aware that they have chronic kidney disease? Diabetes and high blood pressure are also risk factors for developing kidney disease.

Nutrition can play an integral role in keeping the kidneys healthy and preventing disease.

 

Here are some ways you can keep your kidneys healthy: 

  • Choose fresh fruits, fresh or frozen vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat or fat-free dairy products

  • Cut back on salt and added sugars. Aim for less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium each day. 

  • Be active for 30 mins or more daily

  • Aim for a healthy weight

  • Try baking/ broiling meat instead of frying 

  • Explore stress-reducing activities such as meditation and yoga

  • Limit alcohol intake and smoking
