Aging Well on Long Island
Many of us notice changes in our bodies as we reach our late forties or fifties. Maybe your knees ache on the stairs, or you realize the walk to the mailbox was your biggest activity all week. Aging well isn’t about trying to feel like you did at 25. It’s about creating a life that feels good today. Here on Long Island, you have more support for that than you might expect.
The best exercise routine is the one you’ll stick with. Experts recommend about 150 minutes of moderate activity each week, or about 30 minutes a day, five days a week. If that sounds like a lot, don’t worry. You can work up to it with small, manageable steps. If you’re starting out, try a ten-minute walk after meals a few times a week. Even short bursts of movement help, and walking after eating can keep your energy steady. If you’re already a bit active, try adding two days of strength exercises, like sitting and standing from a sturdy chair, wall push-ups, or using light resistance bands. Building strong muscles and bones becomes more important as we age, especially for women after menopause. If you already have a good routine, focus on balance and flexibility. Yoga, tai chi, or standing on one foot while brushing your teeth can help you feel steadier.
Paying attention to your body is just as important as following a plan. It’s normal to feel a little sore after trying something new though, if pain lasts more than a couple of days or changes how you move, it’s time to slow down and reach out to our team. Our physical therapists are here to help you find a routine that fits your needs.
One of the great gifts of living here is how close so many of us are to the water, and the shoreline makes a wonderful place to move. Boardwalks offer a flat, even surface that's easy on your joints, and has a great ocean view making the minutes pass faster. The Long Beach boardwalk runs more than two miles along the Atlantic, and Jones Beach offers a level path with plenty of benches for breaks. On the North Shore, Sunken Meadow State Park pairs its boardwalk with nearby trails for a bigger challenge. Fall is a beautiful time to go, with cooler weather and fewer crowds. Wear comfortable sneakers, ease into sand walking a few minutes at a time, and bring a friend so your walk becomes an outing you look forward to.
Staying social can boost your mood, help you think more clearly, and support your overall well-being. Many libraries in Nassau and Suffolk County have programs for older adults, like chair yoga, gentle fitness classes, health talks, book clubs, craft groups, tech help, and social meetups. Most are free or low-cost with a library card and are close to home. Look at your local library’s events calendar and choose something that interests you. Having a regular class, like one every Tuesday morning, can give your week a nice routine.
All of these pieces work best when you have a doctor who knows your story. A chart can show your blood pressure readings and medication list. It can't tell your doctor that heart disease runs in your family, that you watch your grandkids three days a week, or that the knee you had surgery on years ago still aches when the weather turns cold. At NY Health, our team takes the time to know you as a person. When you need more specialized support, such as our rheumatology team for joint concerns or our physical therapists for strength and mobility, your care stays connected under one roof.
With all that being said, before your next visit, write down something you'd like to be able to do a year from now. Maybe it's walking the full Jones Beach boardwalk without stopping, or keeping up with your grandkids at the park, or getting down on the floor and back up with ease. Bring it with you and share it with your provider. It gives our team something real to work toward alongside you, and it turns a routine checkup into a plan that's yours.
Aging well on Long Island isn’t about doing more. It’s about focusing on what matters, with people who know and support you. At NY Health, all of our patients are family, and we look forward to helping you feel your best this season and beyond.
