Importance of education in advanced Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

March 25, 2020 by digital

Do you or a loved one have advanced CKD stage 4 or stage 5?  If so, it is essential to be educated on what this means to you and what treatment options are available. With the wellbeing of our patients in mind, at NY Kidney Specialists we offer a comprehensive kidney disease educational program (KDE), for patients with more advanced CKD (stages 4, estimated kidney function (eGFR )  = 15-30 cc/min and stage 5 CKD, eGFR = 10-15 cc/min).

This program is led by physicians and skilled nurse practitioners. It is aimed to provide all necessary education to help you improve your health and slow progression of this condition, and also teach you how to effectively participate in your care.

CKD is a major public health problem, and it is estimated that more than 13 million Americans are affected. The treatment goals are to reduce and treat the complications associated with CKD and when needed, to prepare the patient sufficiently in advance for kidney replacement therapy.

Besides medical approaches, a person may prevent or delay some complications of CKD by eating the right foods. Limiting protein intake and avoiding foods high in sodium or phosphorus is important. Learning about calories, fats, proteins, fluids, and a kidney-friendly diet, including allowed fruits and vegetables is vital for a person with advanced CKD. Consulting a dietitian can help those with advanced CKD to find healthy ways to improve their diet and wellbeing, and we do offer onsite dietary services.

We have developed a Chronic Kidney Disease clinic, specifically geared to treat CKD and related conditions. We are here for all of our patients and can help you navigate through CKD stages, help reduce the progression of the disease, and help you manage advanced CKD if this occurs. We are here for you to make sure you know your options and what treatment is right for you.
